The instrucytions given on gimbal bearing changing on sterndrives dot com's help pages says that you may kink the water hose n the transom to bell housing if.. "You did not cut the water hose, or push it all the way on"

Does anyone know what this "cut" thing means?

Surely if the hose is fitted and allowed to freely flex when clamped at both ends, then that's the only way?

Re fitting the gimbal bearing & bell housing and bellows etc today.. any advice on this hose comment appreciated

Cheers.. Steve.

yep, the factory hose i got from my dealer came in a long length. it's the same hose that runs from the inside up to the t stat housing so the hose must be cut to fit if your using it for the water hose from the gimble housing to the bell housing.
i don't know if this applies to genII. but for my mc-1(similar to alpha1) the length is 13 7/8" i believe.
i also understand what they mean about not getting the hose all the way on the nipple.

that's what happened when i didn't get it all the way on the nipple. on my mc-1 i found it very difficult to get that hose on that nipple... i did get it on the second time. yep, i got to do it twice for my mess up. i heated the hose and spread the hose with pliers a lot prior to install. +. the i believe the s/m says to install the bell housing end first then put it on the gimble housing. i found it easier to do the other way around. put it on the gimble housing end first, then route it back to the bell housing and install that end last...

Re: Alpha Gen 2 water hose changing

The hose used on a MC 1, is 5/8", the hose on MR/Alpha, and Gen 2 is 3/4". the 3/4" is more easily changed by removing the nipple from inside the transom assy. This cant be done on the MC1. In either drive the hose has to be installed on the transom side first, the bell hsg side last. And Yes it is A b**** to put on the bell hsg. A 5/16' swivel socket is invaluable, with a long extension. hope this helps, Bill K

Re: Alpha Gen 2 water hose changing

Thanks guys.. Real appreciative of the photo of the kinked hose Ziggy.. It's is a definite to check for, thanks for the pointer!

I bought a 1 meter length of 3/4 radiator hose and I cut to the same length as the original hose I removed.
No great stress to fit.. Soapy liquid on both ends for lube, and it slid all the way onto the transom plastic coupling first. The method was best to push forward and twist to the right towards the coupling.. 4 or 5 pushes and it was all the way on.
I got the bend in the hose to form a nice natural curve toward the bell housing, and it slid straight on the nipple with a bit of a grunt.

Cheers all :)

Spray the inside of the hose and the hose barb with some power tuner. It will slide easier, not easy, just easier.

Any Merc dealer will carry it in stock. PN 92-858080K03
