Alpha Gen One Stalling at Idle

Have a 2001 Sea Ray with Alpha Gen One 3.0 L engine. About a year ago starting stalling when returning to idle after warming up. Carb was rebuilt and problem seemed to go away. Problem returned this year. After stalling, engine would start fine at medium-high RPM and run fine until trying to back down to idle when it would stall. Would start again but with same problem when trying to engage at idle. Replaced fuel filter, installed fuel separator, replaced distributor cap and rotor, adjusted idle. Would run fine for one trip, but problem then recurs. On last trip, after warm-up, there was hesitation at medium speed and extreme hesitation/stall at wake speed.

Any advice on next steps would be greatly appreciated. Problem has stymied two experienced boat mechanics. Thanks!

Re: Alpha Gen One Stalling at Idle

Your engine is stalling, An Alpha I is an outdrive. Since you have a 2001, it's not a Gen I (no such thing) but it is a Gen II.

Sounds like you are due for a new lower shift cable. The one from the engine to the drive. It's binding and activating the shift interrupt system for too long .

Thanks, I think I should have said Alpha One not Alpha Gen One.

Does it make any difference that the hesitation/stalling occurs when in gear (low RPM) and when at idle? I have the problem in both circumstances.

Thanks again.
