Alpha I: need to ascertain forward in lower half

I put in a new water pump and am about to slide the lower half back onto the upper. Which direction (clockwise or counter) should I turn the shift shaft in the front of the lower half to be sure it is in forward?

Thanks.

Re: Alpha I: need to ascertain forward in lower half

When the lower unit is in forward, spinning the propeller counter clockwise will turn the driveshaft. It will lock, like you hit a wall, continue to push it and the driveshaft (the part you put the pump on) Should start to spin as you spin the prop counterclockwise. So you need to turn that shaft whichever way makes the prop turn the driveshaft, when you turn the prop counterclockwise.

If you lock the prop clockwise and turn it, and it turns the driveshaft that means you are in reverse.

Make sure that you still have the boat in forward when putting it back on.

Don't forget to make sure the o-ring for the oil vein that connects the top to the bottom is in place, and when your done refill the drive with oil.

All the above is true. And you turn the link clockwise. Then use a bungee on the prop to create some counterclockwise holding force. This will keep the drive in forward as you install the lower to the upper.

Another question: Now I'm having a hard time getting the lower half up to the upper. My question: should the shorter or longer arm at the top of the shift shaft in the lower half be pointing forward?
