Alpha II Trim line not connected to manifold

I have twin 2001 4.3 Mercruiser with Alpha Gen II outdrive. Last week the port outdrive, after several "up/down" cycles on our trip would no longer go up. The trim motor is whirring. I checked and there was no fluid. Filled it up, ran it, made good sound then whired again. Turns out all the fluid was being pumped out.

Since no fluid was going outside I assume the leak is a hose (the pump are is clean and dry). Bildge is messy.

I took to removing the trim manifold from the outdrive. I was suprised to see that the trim lines were not threaded into the manifold. The gimbal "void" was full of dry crusty goo too. It was very odd and did not seem right. Frankly i do not understand how it ever worked if it was not threaded.

The question I have is has anyone ever heard of this, if so what is the reason? I plan on buying new hoses and a manifold and connecting them by threading the hose into the manifold. Sound good?

Any feedback would be apreciated!
