The steel washer goes where? Is the shift arm suppose to be straight or bent? Keeps kicking out of gear when assemble.

1987 Mercruiser 3.0 litre 181 CID 130 horse
Alpha One stern drive
engine s/n B726948
Drive serial # A47812
Transom Assembly S/N OB706729
Drive unit S/N OB 491133
Trying to figure out if shift arm or bushing actually the steel washer is bent above the cotter pin. Anyone have pictures of or how it is assembled? I have SELOC manual but pictures aren't clear

Did you replace your impeller? Is this the washer that sits on top of the shift shaft? Is this lever on the drive side or the bell housing side? More info needed!........JK

Check this out.
http://www.mercstuff.com/howdoi.htm

If it's the washer I think it is and it's bent then I believe the drive wasn't in forward when removing/reassembling. I know because I've bent mine.

Yes replaced the impeller
Guess it's the washer that sits on top of the shift shaft? must have gone down somehow.
It's the lower shift arm with a shorter front and longer back that connects to the shift from upper housing kind of like a upside down 3/4 rectangle I think you might know what I mean

Yep. Does the shaft on the drive itself have alot of play up & down? If it does, that washer you're looking at belongs on top of the shift shaft in the lower gear case. Gonna have to pull them apart to put it back on. If it is concaved, I would replace it. Make sure you use a stainless steel one.....JK

Is this the shaft that is bent?

If that is what you are talking about being bent, then that can cause all sorts of problems. It is supposed to be straight.

They get bent when people try and remove the outdrive with the gear shift in something other than forward. On my dad's boat we discovered the shaft to be bent - which was why it stalled when going into reverse. We replaced the shift cable, adjusted it, etc, and nothing worked. What happens is that when everything is assembled, and you try and put the unit in gear, THEN it binds and causes the shift interupt to activate and stay activated. When we would take the lower unit off, everything worked smoothly.

Anyway, long story short, (too late I know! ;) ), be sure to straighten that shaft or buy a new one.
