i am a bit puzzled about how to press the ally ring into the outdrive end of my newly fitted drive bellows.
it is a alpha one gen 2 1998 i have let the rib part of the bellows sit into the recess on the gimbal ring but the ally collar wont stay in...does it just get pushed in to place when the leg bolts up? i dont want this to leak into the gimbal bearing!

Re: Alpha one bellow replacement

Maraih,

I've done a couple of those PITAs in the last year. I have another to do when I get home (listen up GR).

The ONLY way I have found to do them right, and you really want to get this one right, is to do the leg end first, use the special tool Merc recommend and MAKE SURE IT CAN'T BE PULLED OFF. The leg DOESN'T hold it in place. What I do is to remove the hinge pins from the gimball ring, remove the bellhousing end of the exhaust bellows and turn the bellhousing to face upwards, then put a car axle stand under it with the tool on top, 'lube' the bellows with [editted] and push the bellhousing, with bellows in the right place down onto the ring. The whole job is an absolute b1tch.

Good luck.

Chris............

Alcohol works, I use Mercury's Powertune because it's handy, and just push the ring in with my fingers, no big deal.
Do NOT use acetone.

That's right Powertune, Merc's fix everything liquid.

I'll edit out the acetone bit.

I use powertune as a cutting fluid, as a 'rust breaker'. It's really good stuff.

Chris........
