Alpha One Gear oil Milky?

Well I drained the gear oil from the outdrive this afternoon, and When I first took off the drain plug the oil was a dark gray, not really milky or thin but dark gray and consistent viscosity with the rest of the gear oil. So i let it drain completely for about 30 min, and when I looked in the pale it was a good dark blueish black color, but there was a bit of milky looking substance floating on the top. I have only owned the boat for a year and I know the outdrive was just rebuilt before I bought it (have receipts), So I'm just wondering if that means water is getting to the oil, or maybe it is left over milky oil from before.

Pictures attached. I will be transferring it into a clear bottle, then letting it sit for a while to see what settles at the bottom. I'll post those pictures up as soon as I do it.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Well,it might be ok,if it was rebuilt it might have some shavings as it " wears in". Shouldnt have any moisture in it but were both halves rebuilt or just one half? Could be a seal in the one that was not done.

This is everything that was done. And it did have some shavings in there.

Re: Alpha One Gear oil Milky?

in the notes is says

Removed outdrive - Installed new seal kit upper gear case. Note, shafts have pits in metal sealing surfaces - no warranty. Labor pressure tested held 15 psi over night. Replaced gimble bearing, u joints, bellows and gear lube. Greased and lubricated completely. No warranty

Could that be a problem?

The small amount you are seeing could be from condensation inside the housing. Best bet would be to keep an eye on it thru the season.
You might want to change it later on just to see if anymore milk appears. At this point, I do not see a major problem.

The boat has been sitting for a while, could that lead to condensation build up?

Doesn't look to be a problem. When you change the oil, and I only mention this because a lot of folks overlook it and end up with milky oil (water intrusion) because of it. Make sure to change the little drain and fill screw gaskets every time you change the drive oil. Real good insurance for real cheap!:D
