I have an '89 Marlin Cobra with Mercruise 260 HP and Alpha One drive. Before the season starts I need to replace my lower shift cable, water pump impeller and all bellows. Looking online at parts I see some kits with all the bellows parts but most are for Gen II drives, others say for particular serial numbers.

I just went looking for the serial number on the outdrive and found a serial number on the gimbal housing, but it was painted over. Cleaned it up and took some of the paint off but can't quite make it out. Is the serial number stamped anywhere else besides that plate at the top of the gimbal housing? Any other way to tell if I have a Gen 1 or 2 drive or what parts I need? Thanks!

Ayuh,...
You've got the Most interchangeable outdrive there is,... The Alpha I....
Gen.IIs didn't come out til 91....

About Any of the Pre-alphas, or the Alphas up to 1991 are pretty much interchangeable,...
The change in the shift linkages on the Gen.IIs in 91 makes them Unusable with earlier transoms....

Have you been up to the Adults Only section at the top of this forum,..??
There's a Gold Mine of Info there to help you through Identifying,+ servicing your motor,+ drive...
