I have a 1983 Chris Craft scorpion with a merc 898 and alpha one behind it. Just found this today. So should i rebuild it or buy a used one. What would it cost to rebuild my self vs buying a good used unit.

Unfortunately... the lower is also trashed. It has metal in it from the upper half. You'd have to completely dismantle it and clean it and rebuild both halves.

The cost to rebuild will be near what an aftermarket SEI new drive.

I'd either go compete used if the price is right or complete new SEI.

New SEI is about 1300.00 I believe with a 3-year warranty. Has new impeller, drive shaft and u-joints.

Used one your going to have to do the impeller and u-joints so will add to whatever you get. The price would have to be right, and you get zero guarantee with used.

Looks like it was run with no oil. X2 on the SEI if you plan on keeping the boat.

I would buy an SEI or find a good used drive. The metal shavings will still be in the drive after you fix the gears.

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... By the time ya buy the gears, 'n bearin's to rebuild that case, yer gonna be spendin' More on parts than a brand new SEI,....

Add labor to that, as it Requires many "Special" tools,....

Good used runs whatever yer local market bears,... Ya need a Whole drive, the lower is trashed too,....
