I have a 1978 Sea Ray 220 Overnighter that I have been restoring for a while even while using in the summer. It's been about three years since I did bellows and impeller so I decided while I was redoing my floor/removing carpet, I would also do maintenance work. That's where things went odd. I removed the water pump and my base is very odd, I can't find anything like it on the internet. I have attached a picture. It has a "pin" in the plastic piece that surrounds the shaft and a corresponding hole for the pin on the current base. I would simply use the old base, but the 5/16 screw doesn't get tight so it appears it's stripped. Did the base somehow separate and now I need to get the part with the "pin" out so a normal base will fit? Any suggestions? This is an Alpha One Gen 1 outdrive, Mercruiser 5.7L.

looks like what I just ran into... it's as if the bearing seal and the water pump base are 2 separate pieces... I was told to just pry out the part with the seal so that is what I did... the replacement was all 1 piece with the base and the seal and everything went together normal as best I can tell... haven't tested yet... I just stabbed a screw driver in the side of it and pried it out...

If you poke at the piece around shaft, does it tilt or move? It may be that the water pump base broke. Have you looked up the new water pump base from your serial number? If not, look it up and see if it is actually one piece. Similar to Iknowalttl, I recently changed the water pump on my merc 200, and the base was broken, leaving the lower part around the shaft. I was able to easily get it to move and then slide up off the shaft. New base was all one piece. By comparing the two, it was obvious the old one had broke. I'm betting that is the case with yours too.
