OK so I've changed my drive oil an some of it was alittle milky.. so im gonna tear it down an do some over do maintenance.
it wasn't real bad but their is a small bit of water getting into the oil some how.

It is my first time in a mercruiser im use to old volvo/pinta, so ill be learning as i go..

First im ordering parts an i hope to get everything i need before i tear into it so im not waiting on things while half way into it.

Next i ordered a water impeller kit, the one that comes w/ base carrier.

And i heard alot about shift shaft bushings going bad. Is there a kit for that i could get an does anyone have the part #'s for it.?

Also is the anything else anyone would recommend changing while its apart.? other then bellows, had those done in the spring.

My alpha one gen 2 is a 1991 with serial # OD563241

Re: Alpha One Gen 2 water in drive oil...!!!

Before you 'tear into it', do a pressure test and find out which seal is leaking. As there are 3 seals and 2 'O' rings in the drive-shaft housing (upper) and 5 seals and 3 'O' rings in the gear housing (lower) it's better to know which one you need to replace...

As for hearing a lot of problems with shift-shaft seals, probably referring to the earlier drives...

Do you have the right genuine manual?

Maybe pressure test would be the best way to go first i'll see what i can rig together..And no dont have a repair manual just been using info from the Net, guess that what makes it more complicated..

You can find your repair/shop manuals (for drive and motor) in the adults only stickies at the top of this forum. Dig down into the mercruiser links and find tons of info to help you.

Boatinfo - The library, containing manuals, brochures and other technical documents from the last hundred years!

The manuals in this link are not able to be downloaded, but you can print out the page(s) you need. Others here will send links to the downloadable versions. Best of luck!

Here's a link to get you going on pressure testers....

I normally just drain the oil out, then screw the gauge set-up in the vent hole, yes.... You have a way of 'locking off' the pressure, so you can hold it? Probably just a clamp on the incoming tube...

Mine has no reservoir inside the boat, just the one for the hydro rams to tilt/trim.. My pressure tester setup has the gear lube pump fitting on one end, and a tire valve stem on the other. So i assume i'll pump to the correct pressure with a bicycle pump an it should hold when i detach the pump.

Re: Alpha One Gen 2 water in drive oil...!!!

I show that as a 1.5:1 drive (by the serial number), which means it's (should be) from a V8... To the best of my knowledge, all the V8s had engine mounted reservoirs... Maybe the very earliest Gen IIs didn't? Can you provide an engine serial number?

If it has an engine mounted reservoir, then the drive MUST be removed to pressure test it... I think we would all recommend you remove it to do the test anyway... 1, it gives access to areas you need to look/listen in order to find a leak, and 2, when you find the leak, you need to remove it anyway to fix it....

Easier to just start with it off the boat... ;)

Yes it is a 5.7/V8, engine serial # OD521372. and there is no gear oil reservoir in the boat , just hydo tilt/trim one. It is a 1991, Engine an drive are in like new condition with no modifications.

The drive is an Alpha one Gen 2 serial # OD563241.

Ok i will remove drive to do the pressure test if its the proper way. Would a pressure test show if theres any leaks in the gasket/area where upper drive is attached to the bell housing?

No.... But if that gasket is leaking, you'll know as you remove the drive....

Chris, if he had the reservoir could it be pinched with flat locking pliers and pressurize through the vent hole? I'd agree that if cant hold 15 psi for a couple of hours it comes off anyway.

Re: Alpha One Gen 2 water in drive oil...!!!

OK so i got my drive pulled an pressurized it an i lost about a lb. of pressure a 1/2 hr. or so..
But could not find from where. so i the split the drives an tested the top, an found nothing. pressure tested the bottom an found 2 places that gave me bubbles with my soppy water, very little each but they do leak.

One i think would be called the lower shift shaft seal, next to the speedo connect,

The other under the impeller housing i think is the base carrier

I already got the base carrier with my impeller kit but what would the correct lower shift shaft seal part # be that i need to order, Also what would the process be to change it?

23-815921A21 = bushing kit.

Put the gear housing in forward gear, then just remove the 2 screws holding the bushing in, carefully lift the lower shift shaft and the bushing out of the housing. Carefully because you don't want to lift the shift crank off its locating pin. Remove the retainer clip and bushing from the shaft and fit the new bushing and retainer clip and a little bit of gear oil or grease on the 'O' ring, then lower the shaft back into the housing, ensuring the shaft still points forward as it engages the shift crank at the bottom. Refit the screws.... :D:

Yes.

I also have a problem with the 'manual' you appear to be using... Might I suggest you use that 'thing' for what it's worth, as a knee pad while working on the engine/drive/gimbal housing....

Here's a link to the Real McCoy -> https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&...YWRiNy00ODUyLWFmNzgtMTBmMzhlNGY4Mzk3&hl=en_US

Download and save. You find this manual actually shows you how to replace that seal....

Re: Alpha One Gen 2 water in drive oil...!!!

Great easy enough, got new shift shaft bushings on, new base carrier w/ seals under impeller housing, lower drive pressure tested good.
now waiting on the new water tube so i can re-attach the lower to upper housing. then one more pressure test before reinstalling the drive!
