I have a 1992 5.7 mercruiser Alpha one gen II and how does the shift cutout work, Isn't the roller on the switch suppose to move off center when you are shifting into forward or reverse momentarily and what makes it move ? When I have someone operate the remote shifter and I watch it, the roller just stays centered. From what I gather, the switch should cut out the engine for a second to allow the drive to go into gear and not grind. I am just checking all systems to make sure everything in operating. After reinstalling the engine.

It will only work if the boat is in the water and it's for getting the drive OUT of gear.

How does that work ? what is the difference from out of the water to being in the water ? how does the shift cable know. The mercruiser manual doesn't go into detail.

If there's No Load on the drive,...... There's No resistense on the Cable,...... It Don't Work........

The Inner Cable Shifts the drive,.... The Outer Cable Housing causes the Switch to work,......

But Only with a Load on the drive......

Put a Load on it,+ It Will Work.........

Thanks for the input, I checked out the old post and it looks like you ( limited-time) were where I was with trying to figure out how it works. Don S pretty much covers it in that post.
