Alpha one lower housing refitment

Have just renewed my raw water pump,plus water pocket in upper housing.Upper gear housing was left on.Now cannot re-fit lower housing to upper as gear shaft splines or something else is not engaging.Lower gear shift is in fwd,prop is locked, etc but no go.Tried turning prop etc.<br />Please help.

While it's sometimes a Real Pain,......It's All a matter of getting Everything Lined Up.......<br /><br />It seems the Water Tube is the Problem for many people,....<br />For others it's the Shift Shaft,...... Make Sure Everything is In Forward..........<br />The Driveshaft pretty much lines itself up, once you get the Splines right.....<br /><br />And,... Don't let the Quad-Ring slip out of place,.... It'll Leak.....

I fought that last year. I could get it within about a half inch but no further. I was turning the prop....but not enough. I finally just kept turning the prop slowly in a ccw direction, with a little upward pressure on the unit, and it popped in.

on alpha one first gen the shift shaft to upper housing shoe can be reached with a finger on the foreward side of the upper housing to guide it in to the shoe. refiting the lower unit is supposed to be difficult.
