Finally back to my daily commuter project, didn't have much choice, pontoon's in the shop getting a new motor and the lower unit blew on my small cab boat.
Not sure how I got the core back in the lower shift cable, but I can barely move it now. Therefore shifting is difficult at best.
What's the recommendation on brand? Genuine Mercruiser or Sierra?
Gotta run this thing for a few days before I can pull it back out, guess I'll find a few of the bugs. Points fouled on the way to the marina this morning, the Princess was not impressed.
This engine seems to have quite a bit of vibration, but it's like the rear mounts are solid, I can't even move the motor. Is this right?

Mercruiser shift capble on alpha 1's are better than Sierra in my experience.

Sierra cable end differs from Mercruiser OEM and is not a robust.

Sorry, don't know where my mind went.
Project is a 18' aluminum cab boat that I am repowering with a 3.0/Alpha1 gen1 that I took out of an old Avanti ski boat.
Transom has been rebuilt and beefed up and mount for the motor is 2X3 aluminum tubing that is tied into the transom.
I was surprised when I tightened the rear mounts down and couldn't even shake the engine on the rubber mounts. I guess that is not as much of a concern in a glass boat, but in this aluminum it seems to transfer all engine noise and vibration to the hull.
I would post pics, but this forum doesn't like the file size of pics from my phone and I don't have an app to resize them.

The rear engine mounts have very hard, stuff rubber. I wouldn't be surprised if you can't force movement. But it is possible to get the installation incorrect and get contact between the transom plate and flywheel hsg. Did you replace the mounts? If not they could be worn and letting the flywheel hsg droop and contact the transom plate.

The small mount washer goes on the top of the mount, cone side down. If the lock washer under the mount was missing or collapsed the flywheel hsg could be too low. All of this should show itself with problems getting the alignment tool to pass. You should be able to see clearance between the fiber washer and the bottom of the flywheel hsg ears.

Or it could just be the aluminum structure. Glass boats tend to absorb more vibration.

Sierra parts get mixed reviews on this forum. Based on experience, I think. I've never had a problem, so I stand behind them. I replaced both shift cables with Sierra and am happy.

What was the failure with your lower unit?

Also, you can email your pics to yourself and pick a small format. Save the pic. It will be small enough to post.

The lower unit is just worn out, started jumping out of gear several weeks ago. Adjusted it to fully engaged forward and barely catch reverse, but would still jump occasionally, last week it got to where it wouldn't stay in forward over less than half throttle. The motor is a '83 35HP Evinrude, not going to put the $$$ into it to repair.
Thanks for the tip on the pics, I'll try that.

The rear mounts were in good shape when I pulled the motor from the ski boat, so I used them as is. I know the fiber washers are there between the transom plate and flywheel housing, but there's not any other washers in between. The alignment bar slides in and out freely with contact on the splines as it should, so I think the rear height is correct, but it is sitting on the fiber washers.

...there should be a spiral lock washer inside the fiber washer, under the mount inner sleeve. Guessing it raises the flywheel hsg about 3/16"

Okay, that could explain some of the vibration. Gonna have to pull the drive again to replace the shift cable, so setting the alignment won't be a problem. Any idea where I can source these washers? Or are they just a common lock washer?
