Alpha One lower unit assembly

Well my first attempt at replacing the impeller on my Alpha One has just one snag. I just realized that before I removed the lower unit I did not put it in forward. It came off fine and I'm waiting for the parts to put it back together. I would like to know how much trouble I will have putting it back on. The lower unit is in neutral. This shifter shaft hanging down loose I'm thinking is going to be a problem now since it is not being held in place. Does anyone have any good suggestions? Hope its not too much trouble.... Thanks

I think this is a MR Alpha (or Gen 1)
Best to let use know what your working on, not just Alpha.

If it is then there is no issue. You dropped the lower without removing the entire drive. Left the upper attached to the boat.

If this is the case, once your ready to re-install. Shift into forward. Rotate the shift shaft on the lower so the prop locks in the CCW direction. Put a bungee cord on the prop to keep it that way. Now make sure the shift foot is facing forward on the upper, and lift the lower back in place to the upper.

The best method is remove the entire drive. Makes it easier to put the 2 halves back together. It does go back together with just the lower, just more trouble

also lubricate the impeller dish soap, KY liquid, etc because you may have to thru the shaft backwards to line up the driveshaft splines. Once raised install the forward nut by a few threads to hold the unit. install the side nuts next.
Rotate upper shift shoe to be in a straight line and slide it onto the lower splined shaft
DO NOT DRAW UP WITH THE NUTS.
Once it slides on tighten the 2 side nuts , then the remaining nuts and allen
