1978 Alpha One drive Merc 228 that seems to have a bad prop shaft seal or bad prop shaft. Had it to a dealer and said they pressure tested the lower after replacing the seal, said the prop shaft was worn by fishing line. I'mma do this myself so besides getting a manual what's it take to get the prop shaft out and replaced? I can get replacement parts and my mechanical abilities are up to par, but what am I actually looking at here?

Here is a link to a section in a newer manual than your drive. While the specs. on parts are different, the process of doing the work is the same. and will at least give you some idea of the process you have to go thru and show you the tools you will need to do the job.

Wasn't expecting to have to have so many special tools, ah well. I've done lower unit work on smaller outboards and this just looks a little bigger. Thanks for the info.

Well, after looking up the prices for the special tools it looks like I can get a whole new lower unit for the outdrive for the price its going to cost to replace the prop shaft. Does anybody have any suggestions to find a good used lower for this outdrive? Its a Generation I, 1978 and I believe its a 1.5 gear ratio. Thanks.
