Saw this ad and need your opinions. Is this installation technically difficult? If not any reason why the owner would not finish after all the new parts?

1987 Four Winns 170 Horizon 17ft open bow. Has Mercruiser 3L 4 cylinder with Alpha One drive. Shorelandr roller trailer. All in nice shape. Runs good. Seats/interior in nice shape. Has canvas bridge enclosure ($1200 blue book value, in great shape) that stows away in aft compartment. Has built in cooler in front of passenger.North of Milford in Highland.

Recently Replaced:

u joints, yoke, yoke seal
bellows (exaust & drive)
valve cover gasket
starter
outdrive water pump (impeller AND housing)
gimbal bearing and seal
outdrive water hoses
battery
carb rebuild
outdrive input shaft roller bearing set
stainless skeg guard

The outdrive is off the boat. The new gimbal bearing and motor height need to be adjusted to reinstall the outdrive. My price reflects this. I bought another boat and need this one gone.

$2950 obo

Without the drive, it can't be run or test driven. Makes it a lot easier to pawn off other problems he would rather you not know.

The alignment shouldn't be off, if it is, the question is why? rotten transom possibly? Even if everything was ok, alignment would take 15 to 20 minutes and installing the drive would take another 15 minutes.

Re: Alpha One Outdrive Installation

i'd be pessimistic. i'd think the sellers trying to hide something.
in general. boat sellers lie on the good side of the boat being sold. they have motivation to do so.
when buying a boat. assume nothing and if you want something to work, be sure you or someone in the know checks it out to see if it does work.
putting the drive back on is the last thing ya do prior to a test run. all that work and the seller don't wanna find out if she runs like a champ with all them new parts? somethings up imho.
i'm no pro on drive install. have done it several times though. Don S' time to install a drive is about right, and i'm shade tree (read as slow to do work)...
not that great of a price for a 25 year old boat (which could easy have wood rot in it) w/ a base engine in it anyways. guess at least it's a mercruiser. that's a plus.

Sounds like the ole' "its so simple to fix that I wont even do it to sell it" line that shady people are infamous for.

I'm with the other posts on this as well. There must be a problem with installing the outdrive . . . otherwise the seller would have done it.

I'd wander in with my alignment tool, 5/8" socket on a long extension and a big spanner.... Check the alignment and install the drive, as has been said by Don, it doesn't take long. (At 15 minutes I'd say he had a coffee in the middle of the job :D:D)... Then you can test run the boat and take it on the water... If the seller objects, run away....
