Hello everyone. I have learned tons of information on OMC outdrives from blogs and realized I should probably not take one on. With that said what are other boating enthusiast opinion of the MerCruiser 5.7 /Alpha One set up? 1998 era. Thanks.

I like your enthusiasm. Thanks. This set up is in a 212 Rinker Cuddy Cabin. Any thoughts? Considering this boat for the Puget Sound in Washington State. Looks like raw water cooling.

I’d be looking for something with full closed cooling for the sound. Just my .02. Keep the salt water touching as little of the components as possible for longer life and less issues

Thanks. I did say no to a Sea ray with raw water cooling. The searay also had no hour meter and was passed from to owner too owner. To many hands on the boat without records or logs.

Be just fine. Great and robust drives and easily capable of taking the 5.7 and more. You can replace an alpha for new, for the price of repairing a bravo or a VP DP. Keep the oil fresh each year with the high performer oil and you’ll be good. Huge variation of props to choose from too.
As for the cooling system. I’m not sure I’m aware of a GM engine that has rotted through. That’s in their entire existence of likely 40 odd years or more. The key is to keep them full of antifreeze in the winter to stop cold corrosion. It’s when they are empty they can rot inside. The exhaust and risers are the only bit that is affected. They are a consumable part though.
