I didn't know the transom unit had its own serial number, but apparently I need that to order a lower shift cable. I think I have the old style thin cable and I want to get the newer thicker cable.

You don't need the transom serial number to order a shift cable.
Get the OEM shift cable, they are teflon coated and work about a million times better than any aftermarket cable, and only cost a few dollars more. Same shift cable used from 78 till now.

Thanks Don. The Merc service manual had a section on the old thin style versus new thicker style shift cable and made mention of the transom serial number. That's why I asked.

I'm assuming the thicker one is an improvement based on problems with the thin design?

You don't have now nor have you ever had that type cable in your drive. That is the old style cables that screw in from the transom side of the bellhousing. Your cable comes in from the drive side of the bellhousing.

Gotcha. They're isn't a thin cable that screws in from the aft side, only the thicker cable. Thanks.
