You probably didn't have the shifter aligned properly when you put the lower & Upper back together.
Look at the section in the site below titled "Gear housing installation"
Water pump installation

Do you have a manual of any kind?????

Hi,
Remove the lower half of your drive. Put your shifter fully in forward gear. . Turn the shift shaft coupler on the lower half clockwise all the way and then reinstall the lower. The reason your stalling is due to the shift interupt switch which will react this way due to the incorrect reinstall of your lower unit. It is designed to momentarily kill the engine to eliminate the load so you can shift from forward to nuetral and reverse and vice versa. Its that micro switch on the shift plate mounted to the starboard riser. Hope this solves your problem.
