Hi, just put my 1987 alpha one drive on the stand getting ready to do water pump and noticed this plug or cap under the mercruiser sticker. It's not square to the housing as if some corrosion has pushed it out kinda crooked?? I pressure checked the drive and she held 15 pounds for an hour and never dropped at all. So she's water tight.

I have two more drives and can feel something under those stickers as well.
Any thoughts would be appreciated as I don't want to disturb it eithout knowing what it is...

It's a welch plug. There should not be any water behind it, perhaps it's leaking, and needs to be replaced. I believe I-boats has them.

As mentioned - it is just a plug that keeps water out of the area. (I think the hole is there from the casting process). There isn't any pressure behind it. I have used JB Weld to seal the area up. Then paint it. Good as new.

Half dollar happens to fit that hole perfectly. A little epoxy and you got yourself some bling with your repair!
