Alpha gen I upper rebuild. I am putting the u-joint bearings back together for the drive gear, I have the style with the small spacer that you have to torque to 70-80ft lbs instead of doing rolling torque. They say to put a hose clamp around the big spacer before torquing which I did and torqued it to 70ft lbs. When I take the hose clamp off the big spacer is still able to slide a little bit. I thought in the past when I did the this spacer couldn't move at all after torquing but it has been a while. Anyone familiar with this being ok or not? Thanks.

Re: Alpha upper rebuild quesiton

it's been a couple years since i did mine. but i don't remember anything being able to shift around after the torque was run up. don't know if it matters but i've seen various torque specs depending on which s/m i look at if i'm not mistaken. between 70 and 80 like ya said... think i used 75..
i thought the reason ya did the hose clamp was to be sure that both brg sets and spacer were perfectly aligned. if they are not, then ya couldn't stick the assembly back into the upper w/o grief since brgs or spacer being off would prevent insertion of the brg. set into the drive.

have ya tried to do it twice? same outcome?

I got it, I was doing the torque at 75, going all the way to 80 made it tight. I didn't think that little bit of torque would have done it. Thanks for the help.
