Alpha water impeller housing sleeve, what is it there for?

Reinstalled my 1996 Gen II alpha outdrive and am wondering if I installed it correctly. What is the point of the plastic sleeve that attached to the top of the coupler on the impellar housing?

I ask this because the sleeve slides right over the water tube in the outdrive. The only purpose I see is to ensure that the water tube gets lined up with the impellar housing???

Also I was blowing air thru the power steering cooler hose to the outdrive to check for a blockage. When I did this, I could hear/feel air comeing up out of the exhaust pipe. (exhaust manifold removed) Is this possible or did I hose something up during the reinstall?

That plastic piece is just a "guide tube". Like you said, all it does is ensure proper hose to bushing alignment.
Which way were you blowing into the cooler? Blowing to the water pump, you should get nothing thru the exhaust.

When I was blowing air through it, It was being blown back towards the water pump.

During the drive install I did feel the sleeve to make sure It was over the water pickup tube.

I followed the service bulliten on water pump replacement and used perfect seal on the base gasket.

What would be allowing the air to return back through the exhaust?
