At the bottom of the housing on the transom there are 2 holes about 1/2" one either side, usually when i run the engine on the muffs they are puffing water out in a pst pst sort of way,
since I replaced the impeller etc, the stb side is spitting out more than the port, is this a cause for concern?
How does the exhaust get into these holes? I cant find any diagram or explaination of what they do or what they are for? I would be very grateful if one of the elders could enlighten me, thanks

i don't believe so. water is just taking the easiest route to exit the exhust system.

we'll see if i understand enough to answer. the nostrils are really called idle relief ports. right at where the exhaust pipe attaches to the gimble housing. there are three holes. 2 low, 1 starboard, 1 port. and one big large hole that leads towards the exit at the prop. water can go into any of these three holes and takes the path of least resistance. the reason for these holes, best i understand, is that at idle, there's enough restriction for the water to not want to exit all out of the prop hub or there enough restriction that the water can't all exit so it needs somewhere to go. so some of the water goes out these idle relief ports. when your running, the restriction is not present so the water exits out the prop hub...
as for one idle relief port with low flow, i don't think it's major reason for concern. sometimes i have nothing but a mist, sometimes i spit water out. i don't know what changes.
if i'm wrong, i'm sure a real tech will let both of us in on the facts.
can't remember who. but someone here has a good pic of the connection at the gimble housing that shows these ports in the inside.
