Alpha1 speedo tube... How far should I drill to clear it?

I managed to get some wood stuck in the speedo tube on my 2008 Alpha1 drive and I picked as much out as I can but there's still more. If I use a drill and move slowly, how far can I go before damaging the drive? I know that once I see metal shavings I should stop but I'm already 1/2" in so by the time I see the shavings, it could already be too late.

So the answer is about an inch. I went the first half inch with the power drill and then switched to turning the bit by hand. I had shot a little windex in the hole where the tube enters the drive and turned the bit and pulled (when it got stuck) until windex came out. Not exactly scientific, but it got the job done.
