Ok ok... Obnoxious question yes... Yesterday no problems, but today first thing at idle at the doc the squeaky eek eek eek eek eek eek eek sound was penetrating my skull and all I can think of is should I wait till I smell the belt burning or the water temperature skyrocket!?!

When I revved up the rpm the eeek eek eek just went faster.

We somehow made it though the day skiing and tubing the lake, and the eeks went away for the day, but im not foolish enough to believe that this problem is gonna fix itself.

I have pretended spraying some magical lubrication is going to solve the problem. Haha

I don't want to wrench on a spare while on the water, so thinking of pulling it off tomorrow and having it rebuilt.

This is my 5.7 liter 350 mericruiser, 1998 in my larson sei 206.

Thanks for any insight!

Wrong forum. But anything making noise is bad, and due to fail.

It will fail....very very soon. Why wait till it breaks belt and ruins your day? I cant believe it lasted all day.

Why make the assumption that it is the alt?

Look, Listen, take the belt off and Feel, it could be an idler or water pump.

yes, agreed, it certainly could be the idler or water pump... got lucky, but the squeek was pretty obvious it was right at the alt. But I could be wrong.

I determined this by having the engine idling, sticking me head in the engine compartment, at various spots while it was 'eeking' and when i was low right (left front of engine if you're the engine).

The sound seem to be emanating from the alternator. but certainly i could be wrong giv'n how sound can refract and bounce around in there.

so remove belt with it cold, start it and see if squeeking is still there? And if not, put belt back on, start up and see if it's back ? I can hose down the idler pully with some good lube right? or jam some grease all over it, but that might be good for it as don s says, but i'm still not sure the next step.

Thanks!

Idlers have a sealed bearing that can die, turn it by hand while the belt is off, any unevenness, replace it.

Turn the alt by hand, any unevenness, send it in for repair or get the parts and handle it yourself.

Grease is fine, IF it is put where it is intended. Elswhere it just makes a mess and attracts dirt.
