My altenator went out on my 3.0L mercruiser. A new one ranges from $350-$450. Is it possible to reference it to a automoblie altenator (which you can get for about 40 bucks) Has anyone done this. If so what was the outcome. Thankx

NO......NO.....And NO
Do not use automotive electrical parts on boat engines.
They are not spark protected and if a gas leak should start it would ignite the fumes.
This goes for Starters, distributors, switches, fuel pumps and carbs. Forget about automotive parts unless you know for sure they are able to be used in a marine application.

I would run a search on EBAY. I did a search of "mercruiser" the other day and found a lot of stuff. Good Luck!

Jeff

As Don said, DO NOT EVER use an automotive alternator, or starter, or carb, etc. How about a rebuilt alternator ? I don't know of anyone in your area, but there is a great place here in Cinti Oh. called George Hust company (513) 681-3120, they sell and rebuild marine alts, and starters. I have been using them for over 10 years now and have never had one of their units fail. I think their rebuilt alts run about $200.00
even with shipping to you that beats 350-400.

You can order a MARINE one wire delco style alternator from just about any auto parts store where the idiot clerks are not too busy to drag the books out and look for it.

A couple years ago I needed one for the old Baja (wire a 3 liter Merc) and had it next day for under $100.

The one wire Delos style will work fine and are a snap to install.

Try NAPA or one of the other chain parts stores.
Don't be discouraged when you get a blank look (NAPA around here is just a bunch of clueless old coots...they are totally worthless) just keep insisting you know they can get one.

Have your current unit rebuilt.Find a local starter/altenator repair shop (automotive) near you.Tell them it is for marine use. They can probably repair it fo $110 or less, you'll have a working safe alternator to reinstall.

DHP
