Repalced the reg / rect and the motor charges at 12.4 volts (across the battery terminals) at about 2k on the tach. 11.96 at idle. The charge rate rises only slightly as you can see. I'm sure it should be charging at about 13.5 to 14.2 when tested across terminlas when raised above idle. The battery was partially drained from the stereo running for 4-5 hrs. Should the charge rate be at 13.5 -14.2 regardless of charge in battery.
Charge rate was over 13 volts with old reg but tach was intermittent... what the &$^% is going on?. I will trickle charge the batteries to full charge and see what happens and swap to old reg as a quick test on charge rate.
Agian thanks to all for any input.

You are correct the regulated rectifier should charge up to that 13.5-14.2 rate you mention. Usually charging/tach issues resolve themselves after replacement of the combination rectifier/regulator. It is odd that it has not corrected in your case. It is possible you have a battery problem. I'd take it some place and have it load tested. That type of test will indicate if you have a bad cel inside, or if the plates have sulfated and just won't take a charge. If either of these conditions exist inside the battery, repeated charging of the battery won't help resolve the issue.

The charging voltage varies with the state of charge of the battery. If the battery is low, the charging amps are high but the voltage is less than 14 normally. As the battery charges up and needs fewer amps, the voltage rises to the regulator's preset limit, usually around 14-15 volts.

If you run a while you should see the voltage rise as the battery charges up. Or charge up the battery at home first, then go for a ride.

If the battery if fully charged and passes the load test as mentioned, look into voltage drop testing across the wiring pertaining to the charging circuit. Also ensure that all terminals are clean (shiny) and tight. Also ensure that the wiring is not corroded internally, or there are no nicks or cuts. Crunching when flexed is a sure sign of inner corrosion. This may have been why your rectifier blew in the first place.

I installed dual batteries, isolation switch (off,1, both,2) both batteries are in exc cond and load tested prior to installing, soldered all lugs to cables, cable is copper and double insulated, terminals are new brass units all connections then sprayed with terminal protector to guard against corrosion. Battery posts were polished with fine wet and dry prior to terminals going on. The old reg / rec never actually blew as such but was intermittent, with the tacho cutting in and out. I double checked all connections on engine loom at terminal strip block, battery terminals etc, isolation switch and all found to be good. switch works as should using each battery or both. My thoughts are along the same line as Seahorse 5 I'm currently recharging batteries from a mains battery charger. Will see if this makes a difference and post the results to assist others.
Thank you to the guys who replied appreciated as always,
