I am having some issues with my boat and am curious if anyone else out there has had the same issue with theirs. The alternator stopped charging so I replaced it with a new one. When I got it all hooked up and started the boat the alternator smoked out, got very hot very fast! I got a second new alternator and battery thinking that maybe I had an issue with a bad battery. I installed both and made sure that they were wired in correctly and fired the boat up. Again the alternator started to get hot so I shut it down before I smoked out alternator number 2. I am guessing now that I must have a wire shorting out somewhere and just curious if anyone else has had this issue and if so what the cause was. Any ideas would be great. By the way it has the 4.3 Volvo Penta.

Show us how you are wiring up the alternator. Post a pic of the back of the alternator. Will you need at least 3 posts before you can post a picture.

if you've got a multimeter, check for grounds. the engine block should be grounded. If in fact your battery / alternator is shorted, be careful. you're not likely to get shocked with 12v, better to be safe than sorry..
