I have a Mercruiser 3.7 170hp with power steering. I bought an alternator kit for it. I bought a 3 wire one. Do I need to pull the whole oem charging system out? Or just voltage regulator? And if its just the regulator what wires to I disconnect and where does the alternator wire connect to. To charge the battery? Thanks

You do not. Just remove and tape off the yellow wires from the regulator. Leave the regulator in place and just remove the wires from it (both ends). You can pull the rotor an remove the stator so that in case one of the magnets comes loose it will not jam the rotor.

My alternator kit. Does not have a purple wire. Mine has a small 18 guage red on spliced into a 10 gauge orange wire. And a 18 gauge black wire

All of them, as if it were not there.
