hi guys... first time on iboats forum. and hoping to get a little help i have recently restored a 1979 wellcraft suncruiser 2000 and i am not getting any charging from my alternator i have just replaced it with a new one and im not sure about my wiring. since i have not been able to locate any diagrams for my boat. i am an auto tech by trade but i guess im lost on a boat? i cant seem to figure out how where the charging system flows tfrom and to the battery i see what i would call a solenoid on the starbort side ogf my engine that a 50amp breaker and starter runs to but not sure if the alternator runs through that as well?

p.s i ahve also replaced all the gauges and im not sure if it should flow back through that wiring as well or if its just like a car and monitors the output.

Re: alternator not charging

You need to tell us what engine and drive combo you have. Doesn't matter what kind of boat. Read the post at the top of the page.

Should only be two wires....
Red/white is BAT....
The other is ground.....
You should invest some money in Mercruiser manual #3......
Maybe Don S can post up the diagram for you.....;)

Re: alternator not charging

You will have 4 wires going to your alternator, what colors are they? What kind of alternator came off the engine, and I doubt your new alternator is the same kind, so what kind are you now installing

Re: alternator not charging

it seems i have discovered my problem. the new harness that i purchased is wired slightly different . my main lead for the alt. is a large orange wire it appears the harness i am using routes that wire to my trim gauge witch also solved my problem there. i got excited and in a hurry and did not pay attention to the slight difference in the two harnesses fourtunately the smoke is still in the harness "ha ha" thanks for the input that you have given me. i will defintley be back im sure since this is my first boat hopefuly with all the repairs i have done so far i wll have trouble free season.
