Alternator Not lined up

1994 mercruiser 4.3LX Balanced shaft with power steering

I replaced the alternator last week since the old one had gone bad when I put the new one in I noticed how out of alignment it was with the other pulleys and when started it squealed very bad.

I've adjusted the tension both tighter and looser, we took it to the lake and it squealed at idle and just got louder as you accelerated. We went to plane out and a few seconds later the squealing stopped and the belt had broken. It's broken two belts now

It runs quiet with no problem with just the P/S belt on so I think I can eliminate a bad water pump or power steering pump and focus on the alternator.

Is there any way to adjust that mount or alternator to line it up better or will I have to do some grinding and shimming on the alternator? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

I did go with an exact copy however I went with the Sierra part as opposed to the quicksilver OEM model. The new alternator went in and lined up exactly how the old one did it looks like to me.

It certainly needs to line up. It could be a casting defect. If you cannot somehow shim it up, then you will need a different alternator.

Did it come with the pulley attached? Some have a spacer behind the pulley.
