Alternator Output Wire

1986 Cruisers 29 ft twin crusader 270's.

Normally the alternator output on this boat (big orange wire) goes to the solenoid on the starter, which is the same place as where the positive lead from the battery cable attaches to the starter.

I assume the starter does not need any input from the alternator, and the big orange wire only goes there as an easy path to charge the batteries. Am I correct in this line of thinking.

The reason I am asking is with the re-wiring I am doing I am going to wire the alternator output directly to the battery.
