Alternator smoking

I have a mcm 140 1986ish, I replaced the alternator and the first trip out, about 30 minutes of running the motor and the belt had melted at the alternator pulls. That belt was very loose so I Chalked it up slippage causing friction and melting the belt (based on basically no real experience). So I put the proper belt on and now it’s still smoking pretty good from that pulls. All 3 pulleys on the belt are spinning and the alternator is recharging the battery now. Any chance it’s just residual belt that’s smoking off the pulley now?

fan belts just dont melt. If it was that loose or worn it would be slipping and squealing like a pig

It was not squealing at all, could the new alternator be bad even though it is charging?

a very excessive charging load, a weak/damaged/dead battery , front bearing getting red hot

What size (maximum current output) is the new alternator? (More than 55 amps is too much)...

What would be the part number of the correct alternator? I just had Advanced auto cross the number of the one that came out. It worked all last season but I have no idea if it’s the correct one

Alright put the proper alternator on and seems to be running great on the muffs, hopefully get it out on the water tonight to test drive...another cautionary tale of “use the right parts”
