Hi, in the coming months I will be replacing the stock alternator, as well as engine steering pump. I have a 1987 5.7L Mercruiser. COuld someone give me some advice on the brand of alternator or pump to use beside the stock Merc brand. SOmething that would be better. Thanks Roman

Be aware that if you replace things with 'non marine' your insurance may be out the window. As Bondo asks, why?

Chris............

I do not plan on using non-marine parts. What I was wondering thwther I could upgrade to a higher amp alternator. I have two battery bank. One does run down with the fridge running.
Thanks Roman

Re: Alternator, Steering Pump Replacement

If you want higher output from the alternator, take it to and auto-electician and have them change the stator. That's the only difference between 'normal' alts and high outputs. And why the steering pump?

The standard alt should keep the battery up (with the engine running). You could have a faulty alt.

Chris...........
