I have a volvo penta 225 d my alternator is no good can an automotive alternator be used in its place

No!!!!! You must use a marine alternator.Fuel vapors are heavier than air and collect in your bilge. Marine alternators are sealed to prevent sparks that can cause an explosion.same goes for starters, fuel pumps, bilge pumps etc.<br /><br /> Jim

You can try to have it rebuilt. Typically the brushes wear out and and alternator shop could replace them for a fraction of the cost of a new unit. Also since they are repairing the original unit, the sealed characteristic should remain intact.
