alternive alternator ???

i have a Mercruiser 170 from 1983 it is working well however the alternator is starting to fail, its got rusty, i cant find a direct replacement locally and would have to order one. is there an equivalent that an auto parts store would carry? if so what specs would i ask for?

any help is much appreciated.

Why not take it into a rebuilder and get overhauled.

Do NOT USE AN AUTOMOTIVE ALTERNATOR...Ok got that out of the way.
If theres no local marine shop, buy one online..buy one from iboats here at his site...

Howdy,

you might be a little more specific on what model you have.....

Does your "Mercruiser 170" happen to be an aluminum block 4cyl engine.....and is the alternator belt driven or is a different type?

If it's belt driven, any Napa Auto Parts can probably get you one in a day or two...

If it's not....well, it'll be a little harder...
