I have 1985 35 HP with a starter on it. Does this have an altinator so I can charge my battery? If so how do tap into it?

thank you

Re: altinator?

Was it manufactured with electric start or was it added?
What's your model number?

A 35 Hp is not shown in the BRP parts catalog for 1985 ...

However I would say it is pretty certain that if it was built originally with electric starting then yes it will have a stator coil and rectifier. If it was a rope start model to which electric starting then it will not have unless they have also been added.

Look for a rectifier. A round thing about 1 inch diameter and 1 inch long mounted on a sort of triangular two bolt flange on the side of the powerhead with three yellow wires and one red wire going to a nearby terminal block. (see picture below)

If fitted with a rectifier and stator coil then it should be wired so that battery charging is automatic.

Check your battery volts. If it is being charged they will rise from the initial reading once the engine is started and revved above idle.

If you find the rectifier is fitted but the battery is not charging then a faulty rectifier is the prime suspect.

The rectifier looks like this

If it is electric start from the factory, it has an alternator. It is already hooked up, so no need to "tap into it".

Re: altinator?

the motor has a pull start too so I am assuming the starter was put on after and there is a push button on the side of the motor but, I will look at the model # and give that too ya guys. If it doesn't have one would it easy to install? or would it be trying to recreate the wheel so to speak?

thanks you for all your info

The most difficult part, I think, will be removing the flywheel to fit the stator coil.

The kit is $102, part number 174037 which includes the stator the rectifier, the terminal block the wiring and all the minor bibs and bobs
