altnator 1972 225 omc

How do I use a 1 wire alt. On a 1972 omc 225 sterndrive it has a external regulator now.
The problem is it is charging 20 amps.

You basically just don't use the wiring that goes to your existing alternator except for the thick wire that goes down to your starter. You can also pick up other styles more commonly called 3 wire. You have one wire that goes to your starter/battery. Another wire is a field wire that gets hooked to the ignition and there is a sense wire that you either just hook up to the alternator output or directly to your battery for remote sense. The advantage of the 3 wire is that it kicks in at a lower RPM than the one wire.
