Of course - it is your boat. Having said that realize that any of the fine particles which get caught anywhere will cause rust spots.

wayne...I've used stainless steel wool for cleaning aluminum, but don't know where to buy it...won't leave rust stains that the steel variety does...just a Thought

Stainless-steel wool is available at almost all marine dealers and on-line marine catalogs. Get a Boater's World Catalog. Also, I have seen it at some Home Depot and Lowe'sand paint stores.

nylon(?) ScotchBrite pads are dandy. come in different grades from corse to fine. have even used 'em to "swirl" finish on stainless transome plate.

Hello,<br />I work with aluminum all the time. I find that to get a real good shine out of raw aluminum I first take 3M scotch brite to the surface. ( I usually use the white but if you have a lot of build up you can use the green or maroon ) Then I clean the surface with a light detergent. Let it dry then take some Weenol and a buffer wheel and the shine just comes right out. This process will take a bit of work and you might want to seal the aluminum afterwards to prevent any future build up. What you would use on a boat to seal the aluminum I don't know. At work I use clear chromate on most aluminum or nickel acetate on anodized aluminum but I am pretty sure that won't work for your application.
