Aluminum Boat Drain Plug

I bought a used older aluminum v bottom boat (SeaMaid) and the drain plug hole will not accomodate the standard 1" plug. The local places only had 1" plugs, I checked Overtons and West Marine online and they also only have 1" plugs. I assume the plug hole is about 7/8" or a bit smaller. Has anyone ever ran into this? Any suggestions? I shaved off some of the rubber fitting from the plug to make it fit but its leaking water around it. I considered using teflon tape or plumbers putty to stop the leaking but was hoping for a less redneck solution :)

Any advice is appreciated!

Thanks!

Re: Aluminum Boat Drain Plug

I have had the same problem, not once but several times. Attwood makes or at least they did make both 5/8" and 7/8" snap rubber drain plugs.

I have also used tapered solid rubber plugs which I have purchase at the local Ace Hardware.

Yup -- head to your local hardware store and buy a couple rubber plugs and stainless machine screws, wing nuts, and flat washers. Drill a hole through the center of the plug. Insert the bolt through a washer, then through the plug, install another washer and a wing nut. Insert the plug and tighten the wing nut. The plug will expand enough to keep in place. It would help if the flat washer on the smaller end of the plug is larger than the bung on the boat. This would keep the plug from ever becoming dislodged. Make a spare while you are at it.

Hey Buddy, I have just what you are looking for. I was just trying to organize all of my miscellaneous parts (or as my wife refers to them as junk) and ran across not one but two 7/8" rubber snap drain plugs.

Send me an email and I forward to you a picture just to make sure it is what you want. If it is, I will make you a deal that even the Godfather can't refuse.;)
