Re: Aluminum Boat, Paint job?

Do you want to paint the inside, outside, or both?

Lots of prep work, but it will look great when done.

There are topics here on the prep and painting of aluminum, just use the search at the top of page.

Did this project myself last year. Before painting thoughly clean area to get rid of grease and other unwanted attachments. Do a base flat primer. I used Imron(Dupont)Charmet Metal Flake on top of base.

There are pros and cons on Imron but mine came out first class even though I'm not a professional....No chip problems so far..good luck.

I have a 40+ year old aluminum boat we found sitting in a field. Used a sandblaster to get it clean...real clean.

The sand left a mild "bite" on the metal surfaces. Just deep enough to really help the paint adhesion.

Use the Interlux topcoat, no problems after 3 years. No leaks either.

Hey Lark40,
Why did you paint it when it was real clean...just to look good on the water, or just to be look different...just wondering. Seibel

I painted mine too. But I went about it in a half-a$$ed manner :) Real light sanding on the edges of the old paint. Squirt of toilet bowl cleaner on the gunk (works great) mixed some 10 year old half empty cans of primer, and put on some nice red PPG paint, thinned way out. that was last year, since then there has been some chipping here and there, but I think its only where we missed the primer, the paint was thin, and ran into something... Im happy with it, want to do some touch up soon, but who doesnt?
heres some pictures, before and after I think.
http://www.geocities.com/cpasseno/craig_p
Craig

Hey Craig,
Looks good, are u sure that ain't a 57' Chevy? Or 56'.?, made into a water mocassin? Was born in 66'. So not good with years of cars. But it looks like a great cruiser, and looks like you enjoy it , very much. Nice paint job, but, I think it needs some tail lights... just kidding....good job, Seibel...Toilet bowl cleaner?...Better get a patten.

Thanks Seibel! Yeah I do love it. Its the most pleasant boat... It does look like an ol 57 and thats how we guessed it as a 58, which it turned out to be! and if you look closely, mounted on top of the steering right next to the motor, is an old bullet shaped tail light!! :D
http://www.geocities.com/cpasseno/before_the_storm.jpg on that picture
Thanks again!
Craig

JH, not a good idea to dredge up an 8 year old thread, if you have a question start a new thread.

You are new and didn't know so don't sweat it but in the future start a new thread.
