I caurrently own an aluminum boat that I use in the pacific northwest with great results. The ride is great, low maintenance, economy, etc. I am wondering if there are any drawbacks to this type of construction. My thought is to have one built to use in the Sea of Cortez.

Re: aluminum boats

My only guess would be money. We have a local company that makes custom boats with aluminum sheets welded, no rivets.I was in there shop when they where finishing up a 42ft.Talking to one the guys on the job, he said their biggest concern was the electrical system, improper grounding would be a mojor issue. He also claimed the floors where stiff enough to have a ceramic floor.

Jim

Electrolisis can be a big issue not only from the boats electrical system but from marinas. Do the research.

Welcome, JNL!!!

What boat are you thinking of? Web site? Sea of Cortez, humm … diving or marlin??? :)

Aluminum is an excellent material for boatbuilding. A few years back I seriously considered building my own aluminum boat. Lack of welding experience stopped me. Unless you are building it yourself, re-fitting an existing vessel is likely to be significantly less expensive.

More fishing than anything. Thinking of a 23 or 24 foot boat powered by an outboard.
