Alumnium Exhaust Manifolds on a Sterndrive/Inboard

Has anyone used a set of alumnium manifolds on a raw water cooled motor? I understand the salt will kill alumnium but, could you control that with anodes and flushing? I would not mind replacing anodes twice a season if needed. Seems you would not have to worry about the flaking rust of iron manifolds. Let alone the weight savings of approx 75lbs in the rear of the boat.
Outboards run all alumnium motors and do not seem to have a problem anymore.

Yes, GLM makes aluminum manifolds and risers. The manifolds are "tuned" (probably good for 4-5 hp, but not enough to notice, but you should notice the lost weight in the stern though.

Thats pretty cool...didn't know that. Wonder how they hold up in salt..

Freshwater? Maybe, but I wouldn't give two cents for them in Saltwater.

The Kodiac engine (Jet drives) use aluminum. They last about half the time an iron manifold will when used in salt water.

Don even if you use anodes? I would think if you could keep galvanic corrosion in check they could last longer.

But I guess I will be replacing with iron this year, I don't want risk my engine to test my theory. Maybe during a repower I can put full closed cooling on and then alumnium manifolds with iron risers. Oh well more money to spend.

If I remember correctly, you have to change the anodes every 90 days and the warranty on the GLM alum manifolds are 12 months rather than the 48 months on cast iron.

Ayuh,.......

I've got a set of those Kodiak Manifolds just waiting to take their place on the "Atlantis" project,.........

They'll be sporting SSteel Risers(ayuh, got them),........
With a Full Freshwater Cooling System(ayuh, got that too),......
Boating in Sweetwater Seas,......

IF I live long enough to Finish the Project...............................................d:)

Corrosion,..... Like the Rusting of Iron manifolds,.....
Is a Non-Topic up here on the Sweetwater Seas.......
