My 1989 Mercury 90hp outboard runs almost all of the time at about 120 to 140 degrees when I am cruising. However, if I slow way down and just kind of troll, the temperature raises to about 160 to 170 degrees --or just below the red line on my temperature gauge. The "red range" on my gauge begins at 175 degrees.
Is this normal? Can I run at this speed for a prolonged period of time without overheating the engine? If not, how do I run at a very low rate of speed and still keep the temperature at a "safe" level?
