Am I wired correctly ?

hello gents.

i have 2 sets of battery cables - one set should be for the 9.9 engine that I don't have yet - the other set definitely powers all the accessories, such as the bow mount trolling motor, the 4 switches that power the bilge pump, livewll aerator pump and the nav/anchor lights.

Question ONE, does it make sense to have all of these to get power along with the trolling motor ? It would have to go on the deep cycle battery because of the trolling motor. I would have thought that everything except the trolling motor would hook to the starting battery so the engine could keep this starting/cranking battery charged ?

Question TWO, How can I test my ignition / 8 pin connector (to the motor) I don't have my 9.9 engine yet - I have the ignition and controls for a Mercury outboard - the year of my stuff is 2001/2002 - and it has an 8 pin connector along with two other wires off the 8 pin connector. I have a lighted 'tester' tool with a black and red wire - with alligator clips. I'm not sure how to check at the connector (which pins do what?)

ALso - like I said there are 2 extra wires coming out of the side of that 8 pin connector - what would they be for ? Tilt on the outboard ? The original motor was an 02 Merc 25 HP 4 stroke.

Thx for any advice/help
Al

Since we have no idea what make or year your 9.9 is there is no way we can tell you what mates with what. As for wiring, the trolling motor should be powered from the trolling motor battery. Everything else should be powered from the start battery. If you have a bow mounted locator, it's OK to power it from the troller battery as it doesn't draw much power.

SilverTip, thx for the reply

More info - my boat is a 2001 Tracker Pro Anger v16 - it has Merc controls, with the trim/tilt switch - the 8 pin connector was originally powering a 2002 Mercury 25 HP Fourstroke with remoter steering, electric start and tilt. I saw the motor when I got the boat - but it was not on the boat and I did not buy that.

I will be looking to buy another Mercury - a fourstroke 9.9 - I have an chance to either get a low hour 2005 Bigfoot 9.9 or a low hour or a 2004 standard engine (not a bigfoot) - the bigfoot model is geared differently to 'go slower for trolling speeds'. Either way this motor will be remote steering and electric start - but no trim/tilt option.

PS. The fact that the pumps, lights and accessory switch, along with the troller came that way from the factory - that was my initial concern on why they would have wired it that way.

PSS. I've attached a pic of my 8 pin connector - also notice the 2 wires on the side of it - one is green, the other is blue.

Thx.
