Hey, This may be a dumb or impossible question, but I am trying to figure out about how much resin I will use to replace my deck and stringers. The boat is 18' long and has two stringers that are about 12' long, plus 2 cross supports. I don't need to know an exact amount or anything, but I was just wondering if anyone else who has done and 18 footer with a similar layout knows how much resin they used. I plan on using 1708 biax, and doing 2 or 3 layers. thanks in advance.

So poly over epoxy? I don't really want to spend too much, but I'll spend what I need to do it right. Just want to make sure the poly will be strong enough. It's not cigarette boat and I won't be out in hurricanes, just fishing and wakeboarding on lakes and such.

i don't think people like to answer questions like these, can't see what you're working with.

i'm going with 15 gallons of poly. you can go with epoxy, will cost ya more though.

That would be my guess, 15 gals, unwaxed poly resin. It always takes more than you think. Yes I would use poly over epoxy. If properly done a poly repair will last you longer than you will keep the boat.

Have a great day,

Rob.

yeah I know people don't like answering these questions, I know when I see them on here I don't usually answer, but in this case I really needed to know whether to use epoxy over poly. I thank you all for your answers and I'll try not to ask such vague questions.

Re: amount of resin

The only way to estimate the amount of resin is to know the amount of glass you're going to use. The ratio of glass to resin is around 1-2 or 33% for mat and up to 1-1 or 50% for nitted (Biax) or woven (Cloth or roving). You need to decide the square feet of each type of glass used and the weight of it, then go with about 1 part glass to 2 parts resin by weight.

This will get you close, but won't cover wasted product or mistakes.

hang on........poly wont stick to epoxy.......what is epoxy?......are you glassing over somthing you previously did and used epoxy on it?

the boat is made of poly.....there is no factory epoxy in the boat......if you started repairs using epoxy....then you must continue to use epoxy and cannot "switch back" to poly

Re: amount of resin

and two layers of 1708 is tons...(tab with matt)...if you laminate them at the same time....wet on wet....you will use less resin as the under layer of cloth will allready be "wet out"

Re: amount of resin

Just did a 17' boat with epoxy and 1708 Biax and 8oz cloth,
Transom-4 stringers-3 bulkheads-deck= 12 Gallons used.
That is 4 gallons Resin and 8 gallons hardner 2:1 ratio.
Not Cheap by any means.

No I'm not glassing over epoxy. The only fiberglass in there is what came from the factory.
