Is there a way to put an on/off switch on an amp so that I can listen to the radio with the app on or without the amp on. Is this possible thanks just thinking of saving battery when it is not needed. I wasnt sure if this would be possible since speaker wires go to amp

Re: Amp question

Most of the amps I have messed with have a remote control turn on power wire so yes a switch will work

Re: Amp question

Assuming the Radio is being played through the amp?...........Depending on the type audio output the radio has and how it is hooked up and/or type of amp., just powering the amp down, most likely will simply mute/kill any audio signal going into/out of it. Very few, in fact, none that I can even recall go into bypass by powering them down and would require that the input source HAS to be capable of driving speakers. Just simply here, if the radio is hooked to the amp solely via RCA outputs, It will not amplify ANY sound because the radio's RCA audio output's HAVE to have an amp to even squeak!!

So a bypass can be made and then YES about a switch, but, the switch would be most likely be a 4PDT on the speaker wires AND use the standby of the amp or just cut it's batt power(either way) AND you to have a type A or C radio (see below)

Go into standby and flip the switch.

So, step at a time,

Radio(not amp), it has audio output wires of course,

Some types of radios have two sets of audio output wires, 1) RCA jacks(circular plug like guys with coax wire, red and white usually) AND 2) Regular like wires that would go directly to speakers.(We'll call this duel output radio, type A).

Other radio's just have #1 type outputs as described above and have to have amps to be heard((we'll call this RCA jack only radio, type B)

While still again, another type of radio just has #2 outputs as described above of just having only speaker wires that can be hooked straight to speakers or amps(we'll call this speaker wire only radio, type C)

Do you know what type, A,B or C your radio is?

Re: Amp question

Put your switch inline to open(break connection) the circuit on the remote wire.

Re: Amp question

Turning the amp off would mean there would be no sound coming out of your speakers at all assuming your speakers were connected to the amp.

Re: Amp question

I agree with Sam I Am - Put a switch on inline with the amp/switch wire from your head unit if available. Run a set of speakers off of your amp and run a set of speakers off of your head unit. Switch the amp off and the speakers directly attached to the head unit will only play - turn the amp on and all of the speakers will play.

or…….add another battery with an dual switch.

Re: Amp question

If you compare the amount of power that a stereo driving speakers or an external amp driving the same speakers, the power draw will be nearly identical assuming they are at the same volume.

Having another set of speakers for low volume use is not needed.

Re: Amp question

Your plan will only work if you have any speakers wired to your stereo directly. I would suggest getting a bigger battery like a group 29 or of the likes and get a charging system set up. BRUCE58 is on to something, Most external amps produce a much cleaner power than a head unit does. There for it is actually far more efficient. Glaru - maybe a description of your stereo system would help us help you. :)

Re: Amp question

Yes, adding more speakers is pointless that's why I wired it so as to use the same speakers. Driving the speakers is a wash(if his radio can drive speakers) obviously minus current driver efficiency's, Class A, B, C and the like(neglectable) but, the overhead of idle current of those amps is where he should save somewhere from .5 -2.5 amps of Idle current(typical amps) shutting the amp off.

For an equation

Overhead amp + overhead radio + speakers drive current(volume dependent) = Total

Best you could do is remove "overhead amp" from the equation to save the planet.

I must admit though, I've killed a few batteries in my day leaving a stupid "**** the neighbors off amp" on but sit idle over a few days, they do draw some juice just sit'n there.

Re: Amp question

I subscribe to the KISS principle. IMHO adding a switch to switch out an amplifier to save a small amount of current is not keeping it simple.

Have any specs of amps that show a 2.5A draw with no volume? That seems very high to me.

Re: Amp question

Bottom line...We need a description of his set up to actually help him.

Re: Amp question

True...need the model number of the amp to see what the power saving would be.

I kinda doubt its worth it.

I agree. If power is going to be an issue then he should start with just that. Get the right battery(ies) for his situation and then get an appropriate way of charging them while on land or water.

Re: Amp question

I would install a second battery way before I wired up a kluge speaker switch.

Re: Amp question

Hmmmmm, add another battery/s to "save the/any power" in OP's battery? Interesting concept........
