An EZ way to replace worn out Pinion Starter (DT5)?

Okay I ordered a new pinion for my dt5 cuz my wife is kinda freaked out about wrapping a lawn mowers rope around a motor. I borrowed a shop manual from the libray and it seems I have to remove to whole starter. Drag. I thought I'd only have to remove that pin and slide that pinion right off. Slide the new one on and replace the pin and walla! Happy wife.
Maybe I could remove the fly wheel(?) but I guess that's a job in its self. Any ideas.

What you do not believe the manual?
Starter should not be that hard to remove

I can remove it I think easy enough.....I just have bad luck at putting thngs back together properly. AND... It says to be careful of the coiled spring as you remove the starter, It can hurt you if your careless. (Me) Anyway I'll get it replaced one way or another.
This is my first outboard. I worked on my cars and trucks over the years and have discovered shotcuts . Maybe here too!
