Im stumped.

Why do you put a chain on a anchor and then the rope, why not tie the rope directly to the anchor?

Re: Anchor Chain??????

a good length of chain first allows the anchor to dig in an the rope to start it swall up to the boat at a farther run from the anchor.. ( the chain & rope combo runs more horizonial with the ocean floor before it's belly run to the boat.) for a much much better angle & hold..

also , equally important. it guards the rope from gettin' nicked or cut on the ocean floor by numerous sharp things, there

A little addition to Crab Baits info: I don't know what kind of water you're in, but a Danforth-type anchor will actually "sail' in any kind of current unless you have some chain holding it down. In the Gulf of Mexico [about a 4 knot current from Gulf stream], it is almost impossible to set a Danforth anchor witout at least 6 feet of chain on it. More for bigger boats and anchors.

Re: Anchor Chain??????

You should have a foot of chain for each foot length of vessel. 18' boat 18 feet of chain.

Make sure you get a shakle with an eye in the pin so you can wrap wire throughthe eye and around the shackle.

There's also the added advantage of having a chain on the anchor rode so there is a "cushion effect" where the anchor rode doesn't 'jerk' at the bow in inclement wheather!
Ross

Remember the easiest way to bring an anchor up is to order the crew to do it!

Re: Anchor Chain??????

Thanks for all the info everyone. I guess here in Missouri there isnt any real reason to do that, being the owner of a jon boat.

Is this the right way to do it?
www.cableone.net/jdurkin/oops.mpg

Re: Anchor Chain??????

Thats great video!!! I didn't even have an anchor when I first got my jon boat so I used one of the old window weights from our 100yr old house. They're heavy as heck and if dropped straight down, sink into mud about 18 inches.

BL...

A brush clamp is ultra sneaky when you're stalking shy fish and don't want to chase 'em off with an anchor.

ok here's whY!!
!

chain is used to prvent chafe on the line and to absorbe shock!!! on my anhcor line first there is the anhcr then 20 feet of 1/4 inch chain. followes by 10 feet of 3/8 inch chain to pull it lower to the ground, then 300 feet of 1/2 inch diameter nylon line marked with a splice of a differnt color rope every 25 feet (it took me all winter to splice it all :)

hope that helps... think About it!

That's a lot of work, but I bet it looks really cool. I just put the plastic number markers through the line twist on mine.

Re: Anchor Chain??????

When we lived aboard we had an all chain rode. You can't beat chain for worry free nights aboard. But now that I'm running an 18 footer in protected waters I find any chain quite a nuisance. I stow the anchor off the stern, so I never bring it aboard, but I must deal with the rode and cleaning muddy chain on a small boat is a nightmare. I spend at least one night aboard a month (at anchor), with a couple weeklong outings a year -- I've been 'chainless' for 6 years now, with never a thought of looking back.
